SATW  provides opportunities throughout the year
for members to enter writing and photography contests. SATW also recognizes and awards excellence for volunteerism and conservation in the travel industry.

The SATW Bill Muster Photo Awards recognizes excellence in photography named for renowned photographer Bill Muster. Since 1981 SATW has presented the Muster Awards and cash prizes for travel photography in a range of categories awarded at the annual convention. The awards are open to professional and amateur photographers. Freelance, editors, associates and emeritus have an equal opportunity to enter and WIN cash prizes generously donated by Nori Muster and Bill Muster, Jr.

The Society of American Travel Writers Foundation (SATW Foundation), a nonprofit founded in the early 1980s, strives to support, celebrate and sustain travel journalism by recognizing and rewarding efforts in this highly competitive field. The Foundation’s Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Competition, open to travel journalists from around the world, honors works in more than two dozen categories, including print, digital, audio, video and photography. Entries are judged by an accredited U.S. university,  and winners are selected from among hundreds of submissions and announced at SATW’s convention.

Since tourism leaves permanent footprint that impact the environment of destinations, SATW established the Phoenix award in 1969 to recognize conservation and preservation efforts of individuals and organizations. In 1969 SATW created an award to recognize conservation and preservation efforts of individuals and organizations. SATW members nominate individuals, communities, or organizations that have contributed to a quality travel experience through conservation, preservation, beautification or environmental efforts.

Each SATW Chapter hosts writing and photography competitions that are awarded with cash prizes during annual meetings. For details on each chapter’s writing and photography competitions and to see lists of previous winners, visit the specific chapter website page.

Marco Polo membership is awarded by the Board of Directors to members who have provided extraordinary service to SATW. Marco Polo members must have made major contributions to the growth and development of SATW for at least ten years prior to their selection and receive lifetime membership.
