THE SESSION
Editors, photographers, public relations professionals and travel marketers are often faced with finding the best image to tell a story or convey a scene. In this session, participants will learn what makes a worthy photo and how to select supporting imagery. The session will address how a photographer can choose a winning selection for a publisher, how editors can identify images that support a story and what qualities Associates should seek when purchasing photos for their image library. The Shootout photos will be showcased as examples as we discuss color, lighting and composition, and how to connect the reader with the medium, in print or online.
THE MODERATOR:
Kerrick James has photographed the American West and Pacific Rim for over 25 years as a travel journalist, with more than 200 magazine and book covers and hundreds of features illustrated. His credits include Natl. Geo. Adventure, Arizona Highways, Sunset, Conde Nast Traveler UK, Alaska Airlines Beyond, VIA, EnCompass, Outdoor Photographer, ExperienceScottsdale and many more. In the past decade Kerrick has taught nearly 70 photo workshops in a wide variety of locations. He’s taught for Arizona Highways Photo Scapes, on cruise ship based trips sponsored by Pentax, and now, his own company, KJ Photo Safaris http://www.kjphotosafaris.com
THE PANELISTS:
Wayne Suggs is an award winning photographer who has photographed landscapes for over 40 years. A Las Cruces native, he was, at an early age, introduced to the wonders of nature by parents who knew the importance of having a relationship with the Great Outdoors. Wayne captures the beauty of the Southwest and shares his images not only for others to enjoy, but to help increase awareness of the necessity to preserve our precious surroundings. Wayne has won numerous awards for his photography, including the 14th Annual New Mexico Magazine Photographer of the Year, the Oliver Award for his work on night photography with petroglyphs, and numerous others. His work can be seen in national, state, and local publications such as New Mexico Magazine, The Reflector Astronomy Magazine, New Mexico Travelers Guide, and the Wilderness Society Publications to name a few. His work can also be seen in galleries around Las Cruces and the Southwest. Wayne leads photography workshops through Muench Workshops, Dona Ana Community College, and private workshops as well.
Keith Kaiser is the senior communications editor for AAA Colorado’s EnCompass magazine. As a key contributor to the largest circulated magazine in Colorado, Keith manages all aspects of production, including editorial planning, freelance writer/photographer assignments, layout and design, photography selection, ad traffic, and more. When he’s not in the office, Keith loves traveling with his wife and 10-year-old twins to a variety of destinations for a combination of relaxation, tourist activities, and local experiences.
Brandon Jakobeit has been the Photo Editor at Texas Highways magazine for six years and previously worked as the Photo Editor for Texas Parks and Wildlife Magazine. He received his Master of Fine Arts from the San Francisco Art Institute and his undergraduate degree from St. Edward’s University in Austin. With careful attention to detail, he selects photos each month for Texas Highways, choosing the pictures that best represent their specific stories and the overall style of the magazine. When not managing the photo department, Brandon likes to get out into nature and capture moments that otherwise would go unseen.
